Get Prepared For Cold and Flu Season

I am so sorry I have failed to post our new videos on our YouTube channel for you.

Now on with today's post. Since we are entering the cold and flu season, you might want to get prepared.

I love to make a few homemade remedies to keep on hand just for this season.

***DISCLAIMER*** I am not a medical doctor nor do I have a degree in medicine. Please consult with your doctor before taking any herbal supplements or remedies with prescribed medication. I have already cleared my concerns with my doctor and I got a go ahead.

This natural remedy for cold and flu season is a packed powerhouse of properties. It's antiviral, anti-bacterial, anti inflammatory, and has microbial organisms to help fight radicals that attack the body. It's all natural. You've got to give this a try. Make it now so it will be ready for the yucky season.

To a quart jar, add lemon 🍋 slices and pack to the neck of the jar, add minced or fresh ginger 🫚, minced or a few fresh bulbs of garlic 🧄, turmeric is optional and you can add it now. Then fill the jar with raw honey until all the contents are covered. Then add just a splash of apple cider vinegar. Screw the lid on, give a good shake, and sit on the counter for up to 7 to 14 days to allow it to ferment, remembering to shake once every day. This will liquify. After the days of fermentation are over, open jar, strain and filter through a mesh strainer into another jar. Save the scraps because you can use them to start another jar and repeat the process at least one time. Store the strained liquid in the refrigerator. This remedy can last for up to a month or two in the refrigerator if you have not used all of it by then.

You can take this as an immune booster and preventative. All it takes is a tablespoon once or twice a day. You can also use this to relieve the onset of symptoms when you feel them coming on. If you can handle the chunks of ginger and garlic you don't have to strain. You can remove the lemon slices and just take by the spoonfulls. Be careful giving this to children. They may not like the chunks or the taste of the garlic and ginger. You can take a spoonfull and drink this in a warm tea for extra soothing effects. Two food pairing teas would be Echinachea, and Chamomile tea.

Also, take precaution when taking ginger if you are on a blood thinner. I have a blood clot and take a blood thinner so I use minimal.

Here is the video version:

****ANOTHER COLD AND FLU SEASON NATURAL REMEDY***

I believe with all my heart that God put everything here on this Earth 🌎 for our substanance and sustainability. Even he said, "It is GOOD!" I believe him.

I have been researching the medicinal benefits of Elderberry. You can Google it.

I finally got a source of them and made my own Elderberry Syrup for the Cold and Flu season. Elderberry Syrup is known to hep with coughs and loosen phlem that has reached the lungs.

I purchased dried elderberries from our local natural health food store and brought them home and whipped this up. You only want to make a little bit at a time. Elderberry syrup only lasts a few weeks and then it starts loosing its potency. Only make a small amount and take when full blown symptoms occur. This is not a preventative. Only when you have symptoms. You can make fresh batches as needed. A small batch will last 12 weeks in the refrigerator but if it is not all consumed in that time, it starts to deplete in potency.

Here's how:

Tip: Elderberries are tart and need a sweetner. You also need a preservative. You can use honey as your sweetner and apple cider vinegar as your preservative. Now, you can kill two birds with one stone and use honey as both. Honey is a natural preservative as well. Since I am making this for kids also, they may not like the vinegar taste.

To a sauce pan, add 1/2 dried berries (that's what I bought, I have not used fresh berries yet since I don't have a source) to 1 cup water. Bring to a boil, and let boil for two minutes then reduce heat and let simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. The more you let this simmer, the more properties and juice it draws out since they were dried. You are reconstituting them in other words. If you start loosing a little water due to evaporation, just add about a 1/2 cup of of water. 10 to 15 minutes into the simmering, take a potato masher and break up the berries and mash them really good to break the berry and extract all the juice. After thirty minutes, remove from heat and strain through a mesh strainer. Make sure to press all the berries to get all the juice out. After juice has cooled to just warm (I will explain in a second), you will add the same amount of honey as you have liquid. If you rendered 1 cup of juice you will add one cup of honey. The reason why you do this when it is WARM, is because it melts better, and you don't add honey into something hot because it can destroy the medicinal properties seeings though this is a medicial syrup. Flavoring a tea is different. Be careful using honey for babies 12 months and under. Pour your elderberry syrup remedy into a jar with a tight sealing lid and store in the refrigerator.

Some people make their elderberry syrup different ways by adding a few more ingredients. Since I am making this for children also, I will not add these because they may not like the taste. You can add a cinnamon stick, ginger and a few cloves while it is simmering. There are health benefits to cinnamon, ginger and cloves.

You can take this by the table spoon full as needed. Remember it is not a preventative so don't waste this liquid gold. You could possibly put this into a warm tea too.

You can see the video version here:

Take in mind that natural remedies take a little longer to work than steroid shots or prescribed medications. Give this time to kick in.

You are well on your way to having your own medicine cabinet.

I hope this helps you and your family make it through this season.

Fall Cleaning and Decorating

Fall is here even though we are still in 90 degree weather. Everyone is breaking put the pumpkins and pumpkin spice everything. Although I think of football and deer chilli myself.

It's hard to get into a chill comfy state of mind when you're still sweating like a pig. But cooler temps will come soon enough but there is some work that needs to be done before it settles in especially before winter hits too.

I love to do a deep clean in the spring and in the fall so if you are getting ready for that deep clean before you decorate for fall, here is a good check list and some home made cleaners.

Keep a check on your gutters of your home too. Leaves will start falling and collecting in gutters. They will get heavy when it rains and can cause the gutters to start pulling away from the roof edge. They also clog the down water spouts. This could be added to a Fall Maintenance list for our dear hubby's. My dear hubby gets on the roof every year and blows everything off the roof and out of the gutters and keeps them clean.

Another maintenance would be to check your floughs if you have chimneys. We clean ours out every fall before the temps start getting low and before we light the fireplace for the first time. I have had many friends in the community have homes to catch on fire because of things accumulating in the pipes. It is not a fun job but has to be done.

I hope this information helps.

Organization Tips and Tricks

I have had several people want to know about the cubby hole zone that I worked on in our grandkids room when I did a make over.

I love the way this turned out. 😍 Bought two 6 cube organizers from Walmart and bought 12 cloth cubby organizers from Dollar Tree. Check out your local Walmart or you can order online. They have different sizes. You can also order the cloth cubby hole organizers online from Dollar Tree which you can find here

My grandkids were so happy and it works so well when they just want to get one thing out and take it to another room. Easy clean up too. Just put those things back into the cloth cubby and carry back to the room and put into the shelves.

If you struggle with kids dragging everything out and then they get overwhelmed when it is time to clean up, teach them organized play.
What prompted me to learn this was one night we had another couple over to visit and they had a baby too that was 9 months older than our oldest son. They got really quiet in that room and we went to inspect. We were so shocked when we walked up on what we saw and just about wanted to cry. The whole room was array. EVERY toy was out and it looked like we took every toy in the room, put them into a big mixing bowl and stirred them around. Books were strowed under all the toys, hot wheels cars were all mixed into his little ball pit. It was a disaster. We got the dads to watch the kids and me and her went to  work slowly but surely organizing this room again. Bless her heart, she was not going to leave me with that mess. After what seemed an eternity, we were finished. I promised that would never happen again. It didn't. I carried it into the arrival of our next son when he got older and now the next generation with our grands.
This is organized play. Group like toys into groups. Put into tubs, toy boxes, containers, shelves, etc.
When the child gets one thing out and plays with it and is finished, teach them to clean that up and put away before they are allowed to get the  next thing out to play with. THIS WAS THE ICING ON MY CAKE.  It worked so much better. Now it may take a little one a while to catch on to this, just monitor their play and try to catch it before it gets out of hand. You're welcome.

How To Make Your Busy Mornings Go Smoother

 Hello Everyone,

We are  almost  few months into the school year here in our area. I'm not sure about your area. Have you all started school yet? Even if you Homeschool, have you started and how is it going? This routine doesn't just apply to when school is back in session. This can apply to anyone having busy mornings and have to go places before work. Even when school is out, parents still have to work and the kids may have to be taken somewhere until you get home. If your kids are old enough to be home by themselves and you would rather them not use the appliances without an adult present for fear of something going wrong, they still have access to breakfast. This can work for couples working opposite shifts and are like two ships passing in the wind. This hack is for anyone that can use it and it benefit the flow of the routine no matter what your mornings look like or the time of year it is.

In our area, I'm seeing families already struggling to stay above water and the chaos with the busy mornings. It is frustrating to think your back into a routine and schedule after being off all summer. It goes fine for a few days and then, BAM!!!!!!! It gets you. I completely understand. I think I can help.

When we Homeschooled, we were more relaxed, but I was still self-disciplined and made sure we stayed on track. We didn't have a lot of time for lolly gagging. Especially since our boys at the time were in extra curricular activities. We still had to be on some what of a schedule.

I was and still am adamant about starting our days off with a good breakfast. I wanted my kids to have full bellies so they could focus and concentrate and not be hollering, "I'm hungry!!" a few minutes later. Although they still did this just because they wanted to get out of some school work sometimes. That's kids for ya.

Here is the way I combated hunger and boredom. When we Homeschooled, I would get them into the kitchen with me to make our breakfasts. This got them on their toes, and got them busy. I would let them choose what they wanted. After we made breakfast, I would let them sit down to eat it while they had their first class which was BIBLE class. So while they were eating, they were also listening. WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER FOR ME.    If  they were finished eating but class was still going, I would take their plates and glasses and clean the kitchen quietly. In doing this, I was also teaching Home Economics, Life Skills, Math,  Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Responsibility.

There are lessons to be taught and things to be learned even in the simplest of things.

Now, when they went to Public School, not only did they have to learn to transition  but so did I. This is where I came up with a plan to make our mornings go smoother and still get a healthy nutritious breakfast in them. Hence, what I call....MAKE AHEAD GRAB AND GO BREAKFASTS.

I would come up with a breakfast meal plan and rotate them every so often. I planned things that were easy to heat up, sit down and eat or they could be grabbed as they were heading out the door and eat on the way.

Sit down, heat up, quick breakfasts can be: pancakes or waffles, with some kind of breakfast meat, muffins, breakfast bowls, yogurt with fruit and granola cups, or complete breakfast that could be placed into meal prep containers.  Basically anything they had to eat with a utensil.

Grab and go breakfasts can be: breakfast sandwiches made with any bread of your choice like biscuits, toast, english muffins, bagels, croissants, crescent rolls, chaffles, layered with eggs, cheese, and a breakfast meat. Breakfast burritos stuffed with any thing breakfast related they wanted to stuff them with. I have seen them use waffles and chaffles  used as the bread layer for the sandwiches. Eggbites breakfast muffins, filled with eggs, meat, cheese, peppers, etc. Basically anything that they can grab, heat up, keep it wrapped and open it in the vehicle and eat it without it being messy. As they became teen drivers, they appreciated this effort I put in so much.

This made our mornings run smoother and they went to school with full bellies.

Fast forward to the next generation, and it is no different for me. I help get out grandchildren to school some mornings. Some of the parents have to be at work before the school doors even open so they can't drop them off on their way to work. This is where Poppie (dear hubby) and I come in.

Their Daddy or Mommy brings them to our house and drops them off. All they need to do when they get to our home is eat, brush their teeth, grab backpacks, put their shoes back on, and head out the door once again.

This is the way I solved my dilemma. I would plan these meals one day. Then I would take one whole morning and batch cook (that means doubling or tripling some recipes or making over abundance) breakfasts. Then I would prep them according to whether or not they needed to be wrapped or put in meal prep containers. Then I had a choice of keeping them in the refrigerator or if it was a big quantity, I could put them into the freezer. Hence, MAKE AHEAD FREEZER BREAKFASTS.

Another person who benefits from this now is my dear hubby. When we are at home, I can do the same thing for us. Especially during the busiest time of the year for us which is early spring to late summer. That is when we are planting our garden,  harvesting our crops, and preserving our bounty. There are times when we get up before the rooster even wakes up and we are out the door beating the heat. Dear hubby will grab something and get on the tractor and I in the garden. If it is a slower time of the year, we can leisurely sit down and enjoy a breakfast at the table using some of the items like waffles, pancakes, breakfast bowls, etc. Whether they are in the refrigerator or freezer, we enjoy a healthy breakfast whether it is grab and go or sit down and eat.

When we go on a work trip, I will make him some breakfasts and put them into meal prep containers and all he has to do is grab one in the mornings and put them into his lunch box. He likes to eat his breakfast at his desk when he gets there. He is all settled in,  and has a microwave. His options are very open. I let him pick his menu, then I take a day and make what he has requested, and I will make enough to last for at least two weeks.

Batch freezer cooking and storing in the freezer lasts longer. If you are going to be in the kitchen anyway and making a meal, why not double or triple it and eat some now and have some for later. Or  make enough to last a few weeks. You are spending one day out of every two to three weeks, sometimes a month, heating up the kitchen stove one time, cleaning a kitchen one time. See where I'm going with this? Just pick a designated day.

My grandchildren even love to help prep breakfast as pictured below. They love pancakes, waffles, chaffles, sausage, bacon and fruit. I will batch cook the pancakes and such and put them into the freezer. I label them with a P, C, W, S or B and they pick the bags out, lay them on the counter and tell me what they want. All I do is take what they want out, heat it up and fix their plates. This teaches them their letter too.

Here is an extra tip: I sneak things into items as well. I will sneak in butternut squash, sweet potato, or pumpkin puree into muffins, waffles, pancakes, etc. I will sneak spinach, kale, shredded zucchini and squash etc., into egg bites and chaffles. Use your imagination and creativity to get some extra veggies into your kids. They will never know what hit them. I forgot to mention, you can add some kind of potato like hash browns, tater tots, or even left over cut up french fries in burritos and breakfast bowls.

Remember to rotate things out and make different substitutions each time you rotate. For example, switch out the meats like sausage, bacon, ham, etc., so they don't get bored with the same thing all the time.

Pictured below is one breakfast idea. We had an assembly line going. These were for me and poppie to eat.

This is what a day can look like when I am done and happy:

I will leave you with more breakfast ideas, prep work and the finished products. I hope these will motivate, inspire, and encourage you to make your mornings go by more smoothly in your home:
